‘I Had No Answer’: Jaishankar Recalls PM Modi's Surprising Question On India-Australia Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the Indian community in Brisbane, Australia, reflected on the evolving relationship between India and Australia over the past decade. Speaking during his five-day visit, Jaishankar acknowledged the pivotal role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Australian government, global shifts, and the Indian diaspora in shaping this transformation.

Modi’s Early Query Sparks Diplomatic Momentum

Recalling his time as India’s ambassador to the United States, Jaishankar shared how, shortly into his first term, PM Modi had questioned the stagnant India-Australia relationship despite shared language, culture, and historical ties. “He asked, ‘Explain to me why hasn’t our relationship with Australia developed? It has everything going for it… yet somehow, something is not happening,’” Jaishankar told the audience, admitting he was initially “without an answer” to the Prime Minister’s query.

A Relationship Strengthened by Effort, Not Autopilot

The minister emphasized that the significant progress seen in bilateral ties has not been by chance, but through dedicated efforts from both nations. “This didn’t happen on auto-pilot. People, on both ends, made great efforts to build it,” he remarked. The relationship has deepened due to four factors, Jaishankar explained: the vision of PM Modi, the Australian government’s engagement, global dynamics, and the active contributions of the Indian diaspora in Australia.

Strengthening Ties: A New Consulate in Brisbane

As part of his visit, Jaishankar will inaugurate India’s fourth consulate in Australia, located in Brisbane, underscoring the importance India places on strengthening its presence and supporting the Indian community in the region.
