A growing medical concern is drawing attention to the risks of a sedentary lifestyle: gluteus medius tendinosis, commonly known as “dead butt syndrome.” This condition arises from prolonged periods of sitting, driving, or excessive screen time, leading to a weak or inactive gluteus medius muscle.

Experts warn that this syndrome can lead to various issues, including knee injuries, hip pain, and lower back pain. As more people spend their days hunched over computers or screens, dead butt syndrome is becoming increasingly prevalent.

“The name sounds silly, but the side effects are serious,” said Jane Konidis, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “The gluteus maximus is one of the strongest muscles in the body and biggest shock absorbers,” she explained. “If it’s not working properly, it can cause a domino chain of issues, from hamstring tears and sciatica to shin splints and arthritis in the knees.”

Dead butt syndrome, also known as gluteal amnesia, occurs when the glute muscles weaken from inactivity, making them slow to activate. Unlike a leg or arm “falling asleep” due to nerve compression, this condition doesn’t cause pins and needles. While some people may experience a dull ache while sitting, pain often becomes noticeable only during physical activities like jogging or hiking.

Dr. Konidis noted that weak glutes force other muscles and joints, particularly in the lower back and knees, to compensate.

To address this issue, healthcare professionals recommend regular physical activity, stretching, and exercises to strengthen the gluteal muscles. Prioritizing these practices can help prevent dead butt syndrome and its related complications.
