A hotel collapse in the village of Kröv, located in Germany’s Mosel wine-growing region, has resulted in two fatalities, with several others still trapped. According to a fire department spokesperson, 14 people were inside the building at the time of the incident. As of Wednesday, police reported that one man and one woman have died, and three individuals remain trapped within the rubble. One of the deceased has not yet been recovered.
The trapped individuals have been able to communicate with authorities by phone, providing their location and condition. Despite the building being partially intact, it is shifting at a rate of 4 millimeters (0.16 inches) per hour, complicating rescue operations.
Rescue efforts are being hampered by the ongoing collapse of the hotel’s ceilings. To access the trapped individuals, a core drill is being used from above. Approximately 250 personnel, including firefighters, paramedics, police, technical relief workers, and special teams equipped with rescue dogs and drones, are on the scene.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation. The lower section of the building dates back to the 17th century, while the upper floors were added in 1980. Police have noted that construction work was underway at the hotel until Tuesday. As a precaution, three nearby houses have been evacuated.
