Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike on September 27, has been temporarily buried in a secret location until conditions permit a public funeral, according to sources close to the situation. The militant group has not yet announced specific plans for his funeral, and there are conflicting reports regarding his final resting place.
According to sources speaking to the AFP news agency, Nasrallah has been temporarily interred due to the ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, particularly in the southern suburbs of Beirut. A Lebanese official stated that Hezbollah had sought “guarantees” from U.S. leaders, through intermediaries, to organize a mass funeral. However, these assurances have not been secured, leaving the funeral date uncertain.
There is speculation about Nasrallah’s final resting place, with some reports indicating he may be buried in Iraq. Abdul Amir Al Teiban, an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani, tweeted that Nasrallah would be laid to rest in Karbala, Iraq, near the shrine of Imam Hussein, a site of deep significance for the Shia Muslim community.
A symbolic funeral for Nasrallah is expected to be held in Tehran on Friday, led by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei, who delivered his first Friday sermon in five years, mourned Nasrallah’s death during the address. A procession is anticipated in the Iranian capital, where thousands of people gathered to honor the late Hezbollah leader, with images of both Khamenei and Nasrallah displayed prominently.
Nasrallah, aged 64, had led Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, for more than 30 years. He was reportedly killed when an Israeli airstrike targeted Hezbollah’s central headquarters in Beirut, using 80 tons of bunker-busting bombs to breach the underground facility where Nasrallah and other senior leaders were meeting. Toxic fumes from the explosions are believed to have caused his death, as his body showed no external injuries, leading to speculation that he suffocated in the bunker.
While Hezbollah has yet to confirm funeral details, Nasrallah’s death marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Lebanon-based militant group.
