A BCCI official revealed details from a recent selection meeting where India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir discussed role of Hardik Pandya with him. They talked about his fitness, form, and how he could contribute effectively to the team. The conversation aimed to align Pandya’s performance with the team’s goals and strategies.
Hardik Pandya continues to face challenges as his role in the Indian cricket team remains uncertain. The spotlight has been on Pandya for losing the T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav, a decision influenced by head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Adding to his difficulties, it has emerged that Pandya’s position in the ODI team is also under examination. His choice to take a break from the ODIs against Sri Lanka was disapproved from some members of the selection committee. As a result, Pandya has been informed that his position in the team is not guaranteed.
Hardik Pandya’s frequent injuries have impacted his position with the team. On Tuesday, selectors told him that they are looking at other players for the captaincy. However, they also reassured him that he is still valued as a key fast-bowling all-rounder and remains an important part of the team. But this also has a condition, he needs to be fit enough to bowl a full 10-over quota to stay in contention. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has emphasized that players must participate in domestic cricket to return to the Indian team after an injury. Exceptions are made for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, but Pandya does not benefit from these exemptions. As a result, Pandya’s place on the team depends on meeting these fitness standards and proving he can fully contribute to matches, particularly with his role as a fast-bowling all-rounder.
Hardik Pandya’s fitness will be assessed in the three ODIs against England in January. However, his main opportunity to secure a spot for the Champions Trophy in February next year will be during the domestic cricket season.
