Govt launches special discount on Motor Vehicle Tax

The Delhi government, led by Atishi Singh, made a significant policy decision on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, announcing a special scheme that offers discounts on Motor Vehicle Tax. Under this scheme, residents can receive up to a 20% discount when purchasing new vehicles by scrapping their old ones. This initiative aims not only to provide much-needed relief to consumers amid rising inflation but also to reduce the number of old, polluting vehicles on the road by promoting cleaner, modern vehicles. The scheme, which has been approved by Chief Minister Atishi, will be officially notified soon.
To benefit from the scheme, individuals must obtain a Certificate of Deposit when scrapping their old vehicle at a registered scrapping facility. This certificate can then be submitted during the registration of new commercial or non-commercial vehicles within three years of issuance to claim discounts on Motor Vehicle Tax.
The Delhi government’s new scheme offers significant tax incentives for residents purchasing new vehicles. Specifically, a 20% discount on Motor Vehicle Tax will be available for non-transport vehicles that run on petrol, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), or LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). These non-transport vehicles typically refer to private or personal use vehicles, excluding those used for commercial purposes.
For non-transport diesel vehicles, the discount is slightly lower, at 15%, reflecting a push towards cleaner fuel options, as diesel vehicles tend to produce more emissions compared to petrol, CNG, and LPG vehicles.
For commercial vehicles, which are used for the transportation of goods or passengers for business purposes, the scheme offers a 15% tax discount on vehicles powered by petrol, CNG, and LPG. Diesel commercial vehicles, again due to their higher pollution potential, will receive a 10% tax discount under the scheme. Overall, the Delhi government is incentivizing the purchase of vehicles using cleaner fuel alternatives, while still providing relief to those purchasing diesel-powered vehicles, though at a lower rate. This initiative is expected to reduce the presence of older, polluting vehicles on the road and promote the adoption of newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles.
