Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded firmly to the Opposition regarding the Manipur issue on Wednesday, reminding them indirectly that President’s rule had been imposed in the northeastern state in the past.

Manipur experienced violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities last May, resulting in approximately 200 fatalities and displacing thousands due to extensive arson damaging homes and government buildings.

Addressing the issue in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi reiterated, “The government is committed to normalizing the situation in Manipur. Over 11,000 FIRs have been lodged and more than 500 arrests made. Violence incidents are on a decline. Schools, colleges, offices, and institutions are functioning. The Central and State governments are in dialogue with all stakeholders to restore peace. The Union Home Minister spent several weeks there… The Central government is providing full assistance to Manipur to manage the flood situation. Today, two NDRF teams have arrived in Manipur. I caution those who seek to exacerbate tensions in Manipur will face rejection… Congress has imposed President’s rule in Manipur 10 times…”

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Modi called upon the opposition to set aside political differences and focus on bringing peace back to Manipur. He sharply criticized the Congress, claiming that the BJP’s achievements in the northeast over the past five years surpass what the Congress would have achieved in two decades. “We must transcend political divisions and strive for peace in Manipur,” Modi asserted. He issued a warning to those exacerbating tensions in the region, stating that Manipur would reject such efforts.
