Future of Digital Reading

Generation Z is transforming the way literature is consumed, with online libraries and ebooks becoming increasingly popular. These platforms offer benefits that traditional printed books cannot match, such as convenience, accessibility, and lower cost.
Furthermore, online libraries have emerged with personalized recommendations and book clubs. This makes reading a more social and interactive experience.
l Generation Z Emerges as Major Reader Base for Digital Books
A recent report reveals that Gen Z (born between 1995 and 2000) is the primary reader base for digital books, with sci-fi, psychology, and traditional culture being the most popular categories.
Gen Z readers also pay attention to self-growth and psychological health, with 58% of new users reading psychological books on China’s Literature platforms in 2022.
Young and new-age readers find it easier to access such important books online. This shows that just because a millennial is on their phone for the majority of the day, does not mean they are killing time!
Here’s how Shanghai is leveraging this trend.
Shanghai Library Collects 103 Online Novels from Chinese Literature
Shanghai Library has recognized the changes in people’s reading habits and expanded its traditional library content to include 103 online novels from China Literature. These represent contemporary Shanghai, traditional culture, and sci-fi.
Additionally, the library collected digital versions of adaptations of 14 online novels. This move reflects the growing acceptance of online culture, particularly among young people, and provides access to a broader range of literature.
But what is the future of our world reading? Irrespective of the format in which books are consumed, it all comes down to what Gen Z is reading.
Gen Z Favors Mobile Reading for Diverse Content, Says Wattpad Survey
Generation Z is challenging stereotypes by enthusiastically embracing mobile reading, as highlighted in a recent survey by Wattpad.
80% of Wattpad’s 90 million users belong to Gen Z. They spend a staggering 23 billion minutes per month engaging with diverse and original stories on the platform!
Gen Z’s reading habits defy traditional norms, with an emphasis on representation and a willingness to explore a wide range of genres. Moreover, modern readers prefer to consume stories and information through user-generated content online.

l Where Does This Leave Us?
The emergence of Gen Z as the primary reader base for digital books highlights the changing landscape of literature consumption. However, it is important to continue the conversation on what platforms and formats the books are consumed.
It is also interesting to study what genres of content “woke” millennials like to consume and who their preferred authors are. Found this correlation of content interesting? I found it very unique to note such recent events and understand what my kids will read in the years to come!
