From Palace to Parliament: Diya Kumari among one of the favourites to lead Rajasthan

With a decisive lead of 112 seats in the 199-seat assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party appears certain to form the next government in Rajasthan. However, the party is circulating a few names for the position of Chief Minister, but no announcement has been made. Princess Diya Kumari, a descendant of the former Jaipur royal family, is one of the contenders for leadership.

She is the granddaughter of the last maharaja to rule the princely state of Jaipur, Man Singh II. As the “princess who walks on the streets” and a “daughter of Jaipur,” she appealed for votes. Her combination of royal lineage and a “relatable, down-to-earth persona” has made her a well-liked figure in Rajasthan.

Diya Kumari has won both of her elections since joining the BJP in 2013. In 2013, she was elected from the Sawai Madhopur constituency to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. With one of the largest victory margins of 5.51 lakh votes, she was elected as an MP from Rajsamand in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Since then, the 52-year-old’sprominenceas a politician has increased due to her advocacy for women’s empowerment, the environment, healthcare, and education. In 2019, she was chosen to join the government’s National Tiger Conservation team. This time, the Princess is running from Jaipur’s Vidhyanagar East and is considered a strong contender to succeed senior BJP leader Vasundhara Raje as the state’s chief minister.

Speaking with assurance today, Ms. Kumari stated that it was clear that the people would back the BJP and remove the “corrupt” Congress administration.
