In a remarkable act of bravery, 17-year-old Sushila from Jhara village in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district saved her father, Somdhar Korram, from a violent attack on August 5. The incident occurred around 7 pm when four armed men forcibly entered their home and assaulted Somdhar with sharp weapons, initially targeting his neck but landing a blow on his chest instead.
Sushila, who had dropped out of school after class 7, was quick to react. Upon discovering the attack while she was returning to serve dinner, she confronted the armed men alone. In a desperate bid to protect her father, she managed to snatch an axe from one of the attackers and shielded her injured father by standing between him and the attackers. Her loud screams attracted the attention of the villagers, who arrived promptly to help. They took Somdhar to a nearby hospital, and he was later transferred to Dimrapal Medical College in Jagdalpur, where his condition is now stable.
Initially, the attack was thought to be related to Maoist activities, but the family suspects a possible involvement of Somdhar’s younger brother due to a recent land dispute. Narayanpur SP Prabhat Kumar has dismissed the Maoist link and has initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.
Sushila described the attackers as masked men, with one wearing a raincoat. Despite the chaos, her quick thinking and bravery were instrumental in saving her father’s life.
