In the DGP-IG conference focusing on internal and external security arrangements, the primary topic of discussion will revolve around the increasing suspicious activities along the approximately one-thousand-kilometre stretch near the Pakistan border in the state.
Matters such as infiltration across the border, terrorist activities, and the trafficking of narcotics through drones will be specially deliberated upon. The outcomes of these discussions will shape the future strategy regarding these issues.
Notably, just two months ago, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) provided intelligence on over 50 suspected locations related to individuals in contact with terrorists in the bordering areas.
The central government has chosen Jaipur for the 58th three-day DGP-IG conference for the same reason. Starting on January 5th at the Rajasthan International Center, this conference will witness the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, among others. The recent attention to incidents related to countering terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, especially those involving crossing the border, makes it evident that the central government is taking the issue of increasing incidents involving Pakistani smugglers along the state’s border seriously. Incidents of drug trafficking through drones have also been reported near the Pakistan border in the state.
Strengthening the intelligence system
If prompt measures are not taken to curb the rise in drone-assisted narcotics trafficking across the border, it could potentially create a route for terrorists, similar to those infiltrating from the Pakistan-adjacent areas into Jammu and Kashmir.
With a focus on further strengthening the nation’s intelligence system and undertaking effective actions against terrorists, media entry has been restricted for this conference. Only the Director-General of Police (DGP) and other high-ranking police officials will be granted access. Even the state police will have limited representation, with only the Director-General of Police U.R. Sahu being allowed entry.
Challenges in curbing drone trafficking
Terrorists from Pakistan have already established a network by collaborating with drug traffickers in Punjab, posing a serious threat to the country’s security. The conference will delve into strategies for preventing proximity to drug traffickers collaborating with terrorist networks and identifying those in contact with terrorists to apprehend them. The organization of this three-day conference is aimed at enhancing India’s security apparatus in light of all these concerns.
