New Delhi: This year’s Diwali celebrations in Delhi were overshadowed by a significant drop in air quality, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reporting an alarming air quality index (AQI) of 328, a stark increase from 307 just a day earlier. The city woke up to a thick blanket of smog, marking a significant environmental setback during the festive season.

Severe Conditions Recorded


The highest AQI was recorded in Anand Vihar, where the figure soared to a hazardous 419, categorizing it under the ‘Severe’ category. This sharp decline in air quality prompted concerns about the health implications for residents. Historically, Diwali has been associated with poor air quality, but this year’s figures stand out:

– 2022: 312 AQI
– 2021: 382 AQI
– 2020: 414 AQI
– 2019: 337 AQI
– 2018: 281 AQI
– 2017: 319 AQI
– 2016: 431 AQI

Area-Wise AQI Breakdown

The deterioration in air quality was reflected across various localities in Delhi. Here’s the area-wise breakdown:

– Anand Vihar: 419 (Severe)
– Ashok Vihar: 368 (Very Poor)
– Burari Crossing: 353 (Very Poor)
– Chandni Chowk: 301 (Very Poor)
– Dwarka-Sector 8: 359 (Very Poor)
– IGI Airport (T3): 303 (Very Poor)
– RK Puram: 384 (Very Poor)
– Wazirpur: 396 (Severe)

The report indicated that while several areas had an AQI ranging between 200 and 300 (categorized as ‘Poor’) the day of Diwali saw widespread deterioration.

Air Quality in Noida and Gurugram

The air quality was not limited to Delhi. Neighboring Noida recorded a ‘Poor’ AQI, with Sector-125 registering 224. In Gurugram, the air quality was similarly categorized as ‘Poor,’ with NISE Gwal Pahari showing an AQI of 310.
