A significant explosion occurred on Sunday morning in the Prashant Vihar area of New Delhi, close to a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) school. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the blast caused damage to nearby vehicles and properties.
Initial investigations revealed traces of low explosives at the blast site, prompting a joint inquiry involving the Delhi Police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the National Security Guard (NSG). Officials indicated that materials commonly associated with crude bombs were discovered in the vicinity.
Authorities are exploring the possibility that the blast was intended to send a message rather than to inflict harm. According to police sources, the explosion occurred deliberately at the school wall in the morning to minimize the risk of casualties. “The timing and location suggest the intention was to convey a message rather than cause significant damage,” said an official.
Forensic experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), CRPF, and NSG have collected samples from the scene for analysis to ascertain the specific chemicals used in the explosion. The presence of a white powder at the site, suspected to be from a homemade bomb made with ammonium phosphate and other chemicals, is being examined.
Investigators also found wires, a battery, and other materials near the explosion, although it remains unclear if they were connected to the blast. The agencies are scrutinizing CCTV footage from the area to identify potential suspects.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast at approximately 7:30 am, initially mistaking it for a gas cylinder explosion. One eyewitness described the scene, saying, “We saw yellow smoke everywhere, and all the glasses were broken. The explosion was so loud it felt like our building was shaking.”
In light of the incident, Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under several relevant sections, including the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the Indian Explosives Act. Following the blast, Delhi has been placed on high alert, with enhanced security measures implemented in markets in preparation for the upcoming Diwali festival.
The investigation into the blast continues, with agencies working to determine the intent behind the explosion and the materials used. If confirmed as a terror attack attempt, the case may be transferred to the NIA for further investigation.
