Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail, has written a letter to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena regarding the upcoming Independence Day celebration in Delhi’s government schools.
Sources confirm that in his letter, Kejriwal requested that Education Minister Atishi Singh hoist the national flag on his behalf during the flag-hoisting ceremony on August 15, India’s 77th Independence Day. However, criticising the move and reacting to this request, the Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva stated, “If Arvind Kejriwal wants Minister Atishi Singh to hoist the national flag, he should trust her and resign, allowing her to take oath as Chief Minister of Delhi.”
This development came to light after a recent ruling by the Delhi High Court, which dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Excise Policy case. The court confirmed that the arrest was based on valid reasons. While Kejriwal’s bail application continues to be a subject of discussion, the court has recommended that he seek further relief from the trial court.
Reacting to Kejriwal’s letter, the Delhi BJP criticised the Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail. The BJP stated that Kejriwal’s letter proves that the Aam Aadmi Party and its leaders were anarchists in the past and remain anarchists today.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva commented on the issue, saying that Arvind Kejriwal tarnished the dignity of Republic Day in 2014 and is now tarnishing the dignity of Independence Day in 2024. He noted that during Delhi government Independence Day celebrations, only the Chief Minister of Delhi traditionally hoists the flag. If the Chief Minister is unable to do so, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi will take on this role.
