China’s J-35A Fighter Unveiled: A 5th Gen Stealth Jet Which Echoes US Design

At the ongoing 2024 Zhuhai Air Show, China has highlighted its growing military strength with the debut of the J-35A stealth fighter, drawing attention as it prepares to become a key asset in the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The aircraft, which shares design similarities with the US F-35, marks a major milestone for China, making it the second country after the United States to operate two fifth-generation stealth fighter models.

The J-35A’s appearance at the biennial event in Zhuhai, southern China, signals that it will soon enter operational service. Developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-35A is designed as a lighter, more affordable alternative to China’s flagship J-20, primarily for air superiority missions with secondary strike capabilities. Its structure closely mirrors the American F-35, further reinforcing its intended versatility.

In contrast to the larger, long-range J-20, the J-35A is cost-effective, positioning it as an important asset for both the PLAAF and the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Its design could complement China’s expanding carrier fleet, including the Fujian aircraft carrier, which is set to join the Chinese Navy soon. Experts suggest the J-35A’s introduction may speed up China’s fifth-generation fighter production, bolstering the J-20 fleet while enhancing the nation’s air combat capabilities.

The potential for an export version, likely named the J-35AE, is expected to target international buyers, offering an advanced stealth fighter at a lower cost compared to US-made alternatives. Though still in its early deployment stages, the J-35A is expected to play a crucial role in China’s military operations, particularly in contested regions such as Taiwan.

Alongside the J-35A, the Zhuhai Air Show also showcased other advanced technologies, including the HQ-19 anti-ballistic missile system and unmanned combat vehicles. However, the J-35A remains the standout, highlighting China’s ascent as a global leader in advanced military aviation.
