The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the tragic case of a 31-year-old doctor found raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. On Friday afternoon, the CBI detained Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, for questioning. This development comes after the Calcutta High Court advised Ghosh to appear before the agency, following allegations of a potential racket within the hospital.

Extended Questioning Session
Ghosh’s questioning took place at the CBI’s CGO Complex office in Salt Lake, lasting more than eight hours. The CBI also questioned several of his former colleagues, including Arunava Dutta Chowdhury, the head of the chest department, and Dr. Sanjay Vashisth, the former superintendent of RG Kar Hospital. The investigation has seen around 30 individuals, including doctors, postgraduate students, heads of departments, and staff members, brought in for questioning. By Friday night, the agency had also summoned security guards, ward boys, and nurses to gather more information.
Ghosh Denies Involvement
Ahead of his questioning on Saturday, Ghosh spoke to the media, denying any involvement in the case. He stated, “The news of my arrest is wrong. I don’t know the accused Sanjay Roy. No confrontation has happened.” His comments, however, have done little to ease the growing suspicion around his role in the case.
Family Alleges Pressure on Victim
The family of the deceased doctor has informed the CBI that the victim was under significant pressure while working at RG Kar Hospital. The agency is now focusing on whether Ghosh was aware of this and if any formal complaints were made regarding the pressure the victim was facing. The investigation is also looking into the security protocols for doctors and patients, the use of the seminar hall where the crime occurred, and the overall management of the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
A 31-year-old civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested by the police on charges of raping and murdering the victim. However, the victim’s family and colleagues remain dissatisfied with the police investigation, prompting the CBI to delve deeper into the case. The agency is currently awaiting forensic and DNA reports to determine if others were involved in the heinous crime.
As the investigation continues, the CBI’s scrutiny of the hospital’s management and operations under Ghosh’s leadership is expected to provide crucial insights into the tragic events that unfolded at RG Kar Hospital.
