The NWS cautioned, “Dangerous life-threatening travel. Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero.” They advised, “If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake.” The service also urged “infants, the elderly and others with respiratory conditions” to “take immediate precautions” due to the dust.

The dust storms followed sudden rains and strong winds in the Central Valley, resulting in gloomy and dark skies over the area on Monday. The storm brought down large trees and caused power outages throughout Fresno County. Additionally, a multi-vehicle pileup occurred on Highway 152, with over 10 vehicles involved, leading to the closure of Highway 152 west of Road 17, as reported by the Madera California Highway Patrol.
