Calcutta High Court: Plea Moves Seeking Urgent Hearing, Cites Severe Unrest In Area; Attack On ED In West Bengal

The Calcutta High Court in the case observed wherein the petition is moved by an advocate who mentioned the recent attack by locals on an Enforcement Directorate convoy, which had gone to conduct raids in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali and Bongaon.

The Division bench comprising of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya was hearing the present matter.

The counsel appearing informed the court that there has been brutal attack on ED officials in Sandeshkhali and then within a few hours, at Bongaon. I beg your lordship to move the matter today or at least by tomorrow since there is severe unrest in the area as well.
The bench headed by Chief Justice directed her to file the matter in the regular course and the court assured her that it would be taken up on January 11, 2024, which is the day designated for public interest litigations, PIL.

The bench headed by Chief Justice in the case observed and has stated that bench was aware of the incident and questioned where the petitioner received their information from.
The court while considering the facts and circumstances of the case stated that this court is aware of the incident. Thus, this court have read half your petition in the papers. Who being the petitioner? How did he get his information? (From newspapers)? File the plea in the regular course…it will be taken up on Thursday.

Accordingly, the court listed the matter for further consideration on January 11, 2024.
