Advocates of the Calcutta High Court organized a protest march on Monday, demanding justice for the junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered earlier this month at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The lawyers held banners and raised slogans calling for swift justice and immediate action against the accused.

Speaking during the protest, advocate Mousami Choudhry voiced the demand for quick apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators. “We want justice. We demand that the accused be arrested as soon as possible and face the strictest punishment,” she said.

Another advocate, Navneet Mishra, stressed the urgency of the situation. “We request the authorities to arrest the accused at the earliest. The investigation is ongoing, and we expect swift action,” he added.

Advocate Narendra highlighted the role of the courts and investigative agencies, saying, “The speed of the trial depends on the court. The CBI is investigating the case and must examine all angles before presenting the findings to the court.”

The legal community’s protest comes in the wake of widespread outrage following the brutal incident. On Sunday, a torchlight protest was held in Siliguri under the banner of “Loud and Clear,” led by a women’s voluntary organization. Protesters in the rally condemned the attack and demanded safety for women across the state.

One of the protesters at the rally said, “We want strict punishment for the culprits. We are not aligned with any political group; we just want justice.” Another protester, Chumki Shah, expressed concern for the safety of women and added, “As a mother, I worry for my daughter’s safety. We need to take decisive steps to ensure women are secure.”

Prapti Shah, another participant, emphasized the need to protect those who serve society. “Doctors save lives, and taking a doctor’s life in such a manner is horrifying. This violence must stop,” she said.

The investigation into the case is making progress, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) employing advanced methods, including 3D laser mapping of the crime scene. The CBI has also conducted psychological assessments of the main suspect, with a psychologist from the agency joining the probe in Kolkata.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked nationwide protests, with doctors and civil society groups demanding severe punishment for the accused and better security for healthcare professionals. The Supreme Court has also taken cognizance of the case, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud leading a bench that is scheduled to hear the matter on August 20.
