Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati has expressed support for the ‘One Nation One Election’ system following the Union Cabinet’s approval of the high-level committee’s recommendations. The committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, proposed holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies.

Mayawati, in a statement on X, welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, noting that while the BSP supports the proposal, the objectives of implementing ‘One Nation One Election’ must prioritize national and public interests.

The comprehensive report, presented to President Droupadi Murmu, highlights the benefits of simultaneous elections, including reduced political uncertainty, enhanced policy stability, and economic advantages such as lower election-related costs. The report also outlines provisions for handling scenarios like a hung House or a no-confidence motion, specifying that any fresh elections would align with the unexpired term of the previous House.

The report, the result of 191 days of research and consultations, suggests synchronizing municipal and panchayat elections with national and state elections. However, this proposal requires ratification by at least half of the states.

The committee’s recommendations aim to improve voter confidence, streamline the electoral process, and strengthen India’s democratic framework.
