The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reiterated its demand for action from the MCD following the third dangerous building collapse in Old Delhi within a week. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor stated, “We have once again urged the Municipal Commissioner to conduct a comprehensive survey of all of Old Delhi within a week and take action against hazardous buildings.”
BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor informed the Municipal Commissioner that this year’s unprecedented heat has caused an increase in cracks in buildings made of old lime or light cement, raising the risk of more collapses during the upcoming monsoon. He pointed out that the Municipal Corporation’s decision to close the Dangerous Building Department and transfer its responsibilities to the Maintenance Department has resulted in increased negligence and accidents. Additionally, he highlighted significant corruption within the Maintenance Department, which deters people from seeking help. He added Due to this, Delhi BJP once again urged the Municipal Commissioner to conduct a comprehensive survey of all of Old Delhi within a week and take action against hazardous buildings.
Thousands of dilapidated houses across Delhi pose significant maintenance dangers, many of which are still inhabited by families. Between June 17 and June 25, two sections of deteriorating houses collapsed in Sitaram Bazar Ward 75 of Old Delhi.
Additionally, yesterday, a large portion of a building at 3842 Gali Lohe Wali, Charkhewalan, Ward 79, in a densely packed market area, also collapsed. This incident resulted in the sudden collapse of three shops on the ground floor and the living quarters of Prakash Sharma’s family upstairs. The Commissioner promptly issued orders to vacate the building and demolish the hazardous sections for repair.
