On Monday, US President Joe Biden celebrated Diwali at the White House, hosting what he called the largest Diwali reception ever, with over 600 prominent Indian-Americans in attendance, including members of Congress, officials, and business leaders from across the country. Biden lit a traditional diya in the Blue Room to mark the occasion.

During the celebration, Biden highlighted his administration’s efforts to appoint a significant number of individuals of Indian heritage to senior positions and noted that Indian-Americans overwhelmingly supported him in the 2020 presidential election. In his remarks, he expressed pride in fostering a diverse administration that reflects the nation. “As President, I’ve been honored to host the biggest Diwali receptions ever at the White House,” he said in the East Room, emphasizing the importance of the South Asian American community.

Notably absent from the event was Vice President Kamala Harris, who was on the campaign trail as the election approaches. Biden reminisced about hosting his first Diwali reception in 2016 while serving as Vice President, recalling a time when anti-immigrant sentiments were rising. “In late November 2016, a dark cloud formed from hate and hostility toward immigrants, including South Asian Americans,” he reflected.

Biden also spoke about the significance of the Diwali celebration, pointing out how the festival has evolved into a public occasion. He acknowledged that the US stands at an inflection point, with decisions made today shaping the country’s future. He emphasized the importance of maintaining American democracy, which thrives on debate and diversity.

Highlighting the contributions of the South Asian American community, Biden stated, “You are among the fastest-growing, most engaged communities in the country.” He also recognized Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, who sent Diwali greetings via video link from the International Space Station, underscoring the theme of light triumphing over darkness.

Biden concluded his remarks by encouraging a spirit of unity and resilience in the face of challenges, reinforcing the idea that the American journey is one of progress fueled by courage and hope. “In America, everything runs deep, especially the courage to serve and protect, to heal and to bear witness,” he said, affirming his commitment to guiding the nation through its current challenges.
