Bengali actors Mimi Chakraborty, Riddhi Sen, Arindam Sil, and Madhumita Sarcar participated in a protest in Kolkata against the brutal rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The horrific incident, involving a postgraduate trainee doctor, has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the nation, with several prominent figures joining the movement.
Mimi Chakraborty shared videos and photos from the protest on Instagram, expressing her frustration with the justice system. She wrote, “Justice delayed is justice denied. Today, my city of joy cried in every corner as we failed as humans. Every lane roared for justice.” She also reiterated her stance that the punishment should be severe enough to deter anyone from even thinking of committing such heinous crimes, adding, “No mercy plea.”
Riddhi Sen, in his Instagram Stories, quoted Dylan Thomas, writing, “Do not go gentle in that goodnight. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,” reflecting the collective anger and grief over the incident. Other actors, including Subhashree Ganguly, Parno Mittra, Trina Saha, and Rwitobroto Mukherjee, also took to social media to express their support for the protest. Trina shared a video of the crowd chanting, ‘We want justice,’ while Rwitobroto posted a video of people singing, accompanied by a heartfelt note in Bengali.
The rape and murder of the young doctor on August 9, while on duty, have led to nationwide protests by doctors and the medical community. In response to the outcry, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime, but the demand for swift and severe justice continues to grow.
