Bahraich Violence: Protests Erupt as Shops and Hospitals Are Torched Following Fatal Clash During Idol Immersion

Tensions flared in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, as protests erupted in response to a violent clash that occurred during a Durga idol immersion the previous day. The local administration has suspended the internet.

Authorities have detained 30 individuals in connection with the incident, which took place in the Maharajganj area of Mahasi, and efforts are underway to locate the main suspect. In the aftermath of the clash, security measures have been intensified in the region after protestors vandalized shops and set fire to hospital and pharmacy establishments.

On October 13, the violence broke out when two communities clashed during the idol immersion procession as it passed through a predominantly Muslim area. According to police reports, an argument arose between the groups, resulting in one fatality from the Hindu community due to gunfire.

Bahraich Superintendent of Police (SP) Vrinda Shukla explained, “While the procession was moving through a mosque area in Mahasi’s Maharajganj, tensions escalated over a dispute. A person from the Hindu community was shot, leading to a volatile situation.”

The SP noted that the immersion process was halted at various locations, which some individuals exploited to incite further disturbances. A case has been filed, and the search for the absconding main accused is ongoing. Police have conducted route marches in the area since the incident to maintain public order.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken notice of the unrest, stating that those attempting to disrupt peace in Bahraich will face consequences. He assured that safety would be upheld for all citizens and instructed authorities to identify the rioters and those responsible for negligence that contributed to the violence.

“The immersion of idols will proceed as planned. I’ve directed administration and police officials to remain on-site and engage with religious organizations to ensure timely completion of the immersion,” Adityanath added in a post on X.
