The title for Avatar 3 has finally been unveiled. At the D23 Expo on Friday, director James Cameron, along with stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, announced that the third installment in the Avatar series will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, as reported by Variety.

Although no footage from the film was shown, Cameron presented some concept art, including images of Neytiri (Saldana) dancing over flames and riding banshees. Cameron described the upcoming film as a visually stunning adventure with heightened emotional stakes, saying, “You’ll see a lot more of Pandora that you’ve never seen before. It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re venturing into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

Fire and Ash was filmed concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which depicted the ongoing conflict between humanity and the Na’vi after the Resources Development Administration (RDA) returned to Pandora. In The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) successfully defended the Metkayina clan and the whale-like Tulkuns from an RDA assault, but suffered the loss of their eldest son and faced ongoing RDA presence.

The new film will continue the story shortly after these events, with Jake and Neytiri encountering the “Ash People,” a more aggressive Na’vi clan. Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025. The original Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film of all time, and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in December 2022. Cameron has produced all the Avatar films alongside his longtime collaborator Jon Landau, who passed away in July at the age of 63.
