Assam is grappling with severe flooding caused by heavy rains in recent days, resulting in the swelling of the Brahmaputra River and inundation of vast areas across the state. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), approximately 1.34 lakh people, including 33,760 children, have been affected in seven districts: Kamrup, Karimganj, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Tinsukia, and Lakhimpur.
The floods have submerged 4,113.27 hectares of crop area and impacted 411 villages spread over 17 revenue circles. Cachar is the worst-hit district, affecting 67,030 people, followed by Karimganj with 27,235 people, Dhemaji with 25,947 people, Tinsukia with 9,868 people, and Dibrugarh with 3,857 people. According to ASDMA, the floods this year have claimed 32 lives in the state, with over 11,000 people seeking shelter in 71 relief camps and distribution centers established by the administration.
“The Brahmaputra water level is increasing because of the continuous rains. When the water level increases, it comes to the roads and there is blockage,” stated a resident living near the riverbanks.
Cyclone Remal has triggered heavy rainfall in Assam, exacerbating the flooding situation. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the floods have affected 14 districts and 309 villages, with Karimganj bearing the brunt of the impact. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts moderate rain across most parts of Assam in the coming days and has issued a red alert for the first two days of July. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected at isolated places, with heavy to very heavy rain likely in some areas.
