Several MPs of Bangladeshi heritage were re-elected in the recently held UK General Elections, all belonging to the Labour Party. According to The Dhaka Tribune, their re-elections demonstrate the Bangladeshi community’s continued influence and significant participation in British politics. Notably, Bangladeshis account for less than 1% of the country’s total population.

The four Bangladeshi elected MP’s are Rushanara Ali, Rupa Huq, Tulip Siddiq, Apsana Begum.

Rushanara Ali

Rushanara Ali, a Labour party member has been constant on this seat since 2010, showing a strong presence in the constituency. Ali has been re-elected in Bethnal Green and Bow, bagging 34.1 per cent of the vote.

Rupa Huq

Rupa Huq was first elected in Ealing Central and Acton in 2015 and since then she has been focusing mainly on education and women right’s. She has been re-elected in the same constituency by bagging 46.8 per cent of the vote.

Tulip Siddiq

Tulip Siddiq is also holding her position since 2015 and actively speak on issues of early childhood education, affordable housing, and the rights of refugees. Siddiq won re-election in Hampstead and Kilburn with 48.3 per cent of the vote.

Apsana Begum

She has been in power since 2019 and focuses on social housing, workers’ rights, and combating austerity. She was re-elected in Poplar and Limehouse with 43.1 per cent of the vote.

Labour party secured majority, giving Tory leader Rishi Sunak a crushing defeat.

Contribution of Bangladeshis in UK politics

Members of Bangladeshi descent have contributed significantly to the British Parliament, enriching its variety and representing a wide range of seats.
