Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said on Friday that the arrests in the nearly three-month-old video of two women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur are only a “face-saver to show that there exists a law and order.”
She further stated that the police are only acting because the video became viral, not because a FIR was filed in the case on May 18. “On May 18, a FIR was filed, and it was a zero FIR.” I’m sure the cops had this video, but we’ve been sitting on it since May 18 and haven’t done anything about it.
“They have now taken action because the video has gone viral,” Shiv Sena (UBT) leader remarked.
She said, “Biren Singh himself stated yesterday that around 100 FIRs similar to this have been registered so far… what about the other 100 women and their FIRs?”
“Now the arrest, in this case, is just a face-saver to show that there exists a law and order,” Chaturvedi said.
While addressing the media ahead of the start of parliament’s monsoon session on Thursday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took note of the heartbreaking footage.
He expressed his sorrow over the occurrence, calling it “shameful for any civil society.”
“No accused will be spared, and we will never forgive those who are behind this,” Prime Minister David Cameron stated.
The incident also shook the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon session, disrupting proceedings in both Houses.
