Apple is set to introduce several significant updates to the AirPods Pro 2, enhancing their functionality with new hearing health features.

The upcoming update will include a “clinical grade” hearing aid capability, pending FDA approval. This feature aims to amplify specific sounds, such as speech and environmental noises, in real time. Apple anticipates receiving clearance from the FDA and other regulatory bodies soon.

In addition to the hearing aid function, Apple is adding a clinically validated hearing test that can be completed in under five minutes. This test, which requires both the AirPods Pro and a connected iPhone, involves listening to sounds at various frequencies and responding via the iPhone screen. Results will be displayed in the iPhone Health app, creating a personalized hearing profile that adjusts audio playback for music, podcasts, and calls.

Moreover, Apple is introducing a passive hearing protection mode, designed to reduce noise exposure in loud environments, such as concerts. This feature operates continuously to help prevent hearing damage, noting that one in three people regularly encounter harmful noise levels.

These updates for the AirPods Pro 2 are slated for release this fall in over 100 countries and regions. They will be available as a free software update for iOS 18.
