Maggie Yu Miao, a former Hong Kong TV star, has left her glamorous career in acting to work as a waitress in Mainland China. In 2023, she made the decision to step away from the entertainment world and began her new career in a restaurant in Dongguan, China.
Sharing Her New Life on Social Media
Yu occasionally shares glimpses of her life as a waitress on social media. In one recent video, she was seen chopping watermelons. She explained that she earned 150 yuan for chopping 30 watermelons that day. Prior to this, she had earned 180 yuan for setting tables.
A Film Offer and Her Response
Yu received a text offering her a role in a film. The message stated: “We have a role here, 500 yuan a day. Do you want it?” Yu responded: “I’m in Dongguan now and have some fame here. I’ll consider it first. 500 yuan … should I go to Hong Kong to film a movie or stay here and work?”
Choosing Stability Over Glamour
Yu explained that her decision to leave acting was based on her desire for stability. She feels her current job in Dongguan is more fulfilling and manageable than the uncertainty of acting. “I’m in Dongguan every day, and it’s very fulfilling. I earn money daily,” she shared. “Life in Dongguan is fulfilling! Working here today, somewhere else tomorrow — there’s always income. Acting, on the other hand, feels uncertain.”
Her Career Journey
Yu began her career after becoming a finalist in the Miss China International Pageant. In 2012, she joined Hong Kong broadcaster TVB and quickly gained popularity for her roles in TV shows like Ghost of Relativity and My Lover From The Planet Meow. Despite her earlier success, Yu now prefers the stability of her current life as a waitress.
