The Allahabad High Court dismissed the second bail application of Anil Bhati, also known as Sonu, a member associated with the Sundar Bhati gang, under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act, 1986 on Monday night.
Initially, the high court granted bail to Anil Bhati, but the state government challenged this decision in the Supreme Court. The apex court intervened, preventing the release of the gangster based on the high court’s order. Following this, a second bail plea was swiftly filed on behalf of Anil Bhati in the high court, only to be promptly rejected.
The bail petition argued that the high court had previously stayed the trial against the gangster, underscoring that, owing to his prolonged detention without a trial, he should be granted bail. However, countering the bail plea, additional government counsel Vikas Sahay highlighted that the argument concerning the high court’s stay on the gangster’s trial had already been presented to the Supreme Court, resulting in the rejection of the initial bail plea.
The advocate contended that the petitioner failed to furnish any new facts or evidence supporting the gangster’s plea for bail. Stressing that Anil Bhati is an active member of the Sundar Bhati gang and a noted history-sheeter in Gautam Buddh Nagar, the advocate further emphasized that the gangster is wanted in multiple cases, including murder, robbery, dacoity, and extortion.
