Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the West Bengal Congress president, visited the home of the deceased doctor and spoke with her parents. Chowdhury claimed that the police had placed the doctor’s parents under “house arrest” after their daughter was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
He further alleged that the police had offered the victim’s father money to expedite the cremation of her body. Chowdhury said, “I visited the family and spoke with them for a long time. The police have confined the family to their house, citing various reasons. They have barricaded the area, and even the CISF is unaware of this.”
According to Chowdhury, the Kolkata Police, acting on state government orders, had suggested that the father quickly cremate his daughter’s body in exchange for money.
The 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9 in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Since then, junior doctors have been on a cease-work protest, demanding justice for the victim and stronger security at medical facilities.
When Chowdhury attempted to meet with the protesting junior doctors at the hospital, he was stopped by the police. He commented, “I went there as a common citizen, not as a political leader, to show my support. However, the police prevented me from meeting them. If they had acted this swiftly earlier, our colleague might not have suffered this fate.”
