As per the officials in Chhattisgarh, on Thursday, 10 cops and their driver were killed when their van was exploded by an improvised explosive device (IED) by Naxals in the Baster district of Chhattisgarh. On that vehicle, the policemen belong to the District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel, a special force of the Chhattisgarh police that comprises mostly local tribals who have been trained to combat Maoists.
According to officials, the officers were returning from an anti-Maoist operation that had been started as a result of intelligence inputs.
In several successful operations against the rebels in Bastar, the DRG has played a key role, a hotbed of left-wing extremism.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and took stoke of the incident and HM also assured the Chhattisgarh CM that the centre would give all possible help.
“The news of the martyrdom of our 10 DRG jawans and a driver due to an IED blast targeting the DRG force which had arrived for anti-Naxal operation on the information of the presence of Maoist cadre under Aranpur police station area of Dantewada is very sad. We share the grief of their families. May their soul rest in peace,” Mr Baghel tweeted.
