A 21-year-old student at the Vishwakarma Government College in Chandkheda, Ahmedabad, committed suicide on Sunday night in his dorm room, according to the reports.
The youth has been identified as Prabhat Sharma, a resident of Deepmala Apartments in Gujarat’s industrial town of Vapi in the Valsad district. He was enrolled in the second semester of his college’s Bachelor of Engineering programme.
He hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his dorm room as he was in so much debt from his online gambling habit, according to the police.
According to reports, authorities discovered through the inquiry that Sharma was a talented student who received grades above distinction in both his engineering course’s first semester and in classes 10 and 12.
A police officer claimed that the man started losing money quickly after switching from playing online games to online gambling over the course of a year.
The policeman claimed that when he went to his home in Vapi on August 27, the boy told his mother that his internet gambling habit made it difficult for him to concentrate on his studies.
The officer added that Sharma’s suicide note stated that he had taken out loans from numerous people and asked his father to repay the bills if anyone came to them.
“If someone comes and asks for money, please pay them,” Sharma wrote in his suicide note, addressing his father.
He apparently banned many numbers, including his father’s, after returning from Vapi as he descended into depression. According to the officer, his father had to call his classmates to find out where he was.
He spent the entire Sunday in his hostel room. He apparently killed himself in the afternoon as his hostel roommates went out. He was found hanging when they came back in the evening.
