Over 700 participants braved heavy rain to take part in a vibrant yoga event at London’s iconic Trafalgar Square, organized by the High Commission of India in the UK ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21. This annual celebration, adopted by the United Nations, aims to promote yoga’s universal appeal and benefits.

Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami expressed delight at the turnout, stating, “It was a great pleasure to have well over 700 people here in this central spot in London, with the iconic statues all around it. He highlighted the diverse participation from Londoners, emphasizing that yoga transcends boundaries and unites people from all walks of life. He said “exemplifying the point that our Prime Minister has made, that yoga unites everybody and that yoga is for everybody.”

Reflecting on the event’s growth, Doraiswami noted, “We had even more people here; we’ve had more yoga schools join us; and we’ve had a bigger diversity of communities.” He emphasized that the focus remains on yoga as a healing and personal growth practice.

Hirdesh Gupta, Co-founder of the Indian Diaspora in the UK, praised Prime Minister Modi for promoting yoga globally, saying, “Now, everybody is adopting yoga and making it a part of their day-to-day life.”

The Yoga event portraited yoga’s enduring popularity and its role in fostering well-being and unity across communities, echoing its global resonance as a practice that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries.
