Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 due to age-related health issues, as confirmed by AIIMS. Tributes have been flooding in from across India following the former Prime Minister’s demise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via a post on X, stating that India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders and that his thoughts are with Dr. Manmohan Singh’s family, friends, and many admirers.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also conveyed his sorrow over Singh’s passing, noting the significant impact he had not only on India’s economic reforms but also on shaping Indian foreign policy. Earlier this year, Singh concluded his tenure in the Rajya Sabha after holding a position there for 33 years.
Born in Punjab in 1932, Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister of India for two terms, from 2004 to 2014. He first took office in 2004 after the Congress party’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA and was re-elected for a second term in 2009, remaining in office until he was succeeded by PM Narendra Modi in 2014.
