Scholz Urges Putin To Negotiate For Peace Amid Escalating Ukraine Conflict

In a significant diplomatic move, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to show a willingness to negotiate with Ukraine. The appeal came during a phone call on Friday, as the ongoing conflict continues to escalate.

Sharing the update on X, Scholz stated, “I called on President Putin to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and withdraw his troops.” Scholz emphasized the importance of achieving a “just and lasting peace” through dialogue.

Renewed Efforts for Peace Talks

This marks the first conversation between the two leaders since December 2022, reflecting heightened concerns over Russia’s intensified military actions in Ukraine. Scholz reiterated the need for Russia to commit to peaceful negotiations amid rising civilian casualties.

Kremlin’s Response

The Kremlin, however, maintained its stance, with Putin criticizing Western nations, including Germany, for supplying weapons to Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, these actions embolden Ukraine to reject peace talks and escalate hostilities.

Zelenskyy Condemns Continued Attacks

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s relentless shelling, which has targeted multiple regions, including Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy said, “Russia continues terrorizing peaceful cities and communities.” He reported significant damage to residential buildings, public infrastructure, and educational institutions.

*Growing International Concern

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began with Moscow’s invasion in February 2022, has led to widespread destruction and loss of life. Despite international condemnation, Russia denies targeting civilians, even as evidence mounts of attacks on residential areas.

As the conflict intensifies, the international community watches closely, urging both sides to return to the negotiating table.
