North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has again reaffirmed that North Korea has unwavering support for Russia in Ukraine War, following a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov in Pyongyang on Friday. The meeting, which took place amid growing international concern over the deepening ties between the two nations, saw both sides reach a “satisfactory consensus” on enhancing their strategic partnership and defending their sovereignty against perceived foreign threats, according to North Korean state media.
Kim expressed North Korea’s commitment to supporting Russia’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, specifically in opposition to what both Moscow and Pyongyang view as Western imperialist actions, including NATO’s eastward expansion and the US-led initiatives to curb Russia’s influence. North Korean leader condemned the US decision in November to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike targets within Russia, framing it as direct interference in the conflict. Kim also praised recent Russian airstrikes in Ukraine as a “timely and effective measure” of Russia’s determination.
This meeting comes as concerns escalate about North Korea’s growing military involvement in the war. Reports indicate that North Korea has sent over 10,000 troops to Russia, with some already deployed on the frontlines. In addition, North Korea is believed to have supplied artillery systems, missiles, and other arms to support Russia’s ongoing military efforts, although both countries have denied these claims.
There are also fears that Russia could offer North Korea advanced military technology, including assistance with developing more powerful nuclear missiles, in exchange for support. South Korean officials have reported that Russia may have provided North Korea with air defense systems, military technologies, and economic aid, possibly including resources for North Korea’s space-based surveillance program.
The growing military alliance between Russia and North Korea is highlighted by a treaty signed in June, which stipulates that both countries will provide military assistance if either is attacked a landmark defense agreement between the two nations.
