Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley hailed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit as a “historic moment” for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations. She emphasized that the visit marked a significant milestone in India-CARICOM relations and underscored the strengthening ties between the two regions.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mottley remarked, “We are honoured to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is a historic moment for CARICOM to engage with India at the level of Heads of Government.”
PM Modi’s arrival in Guyana was warmly received by President Irfaan Ali, Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, and Barbados PM Mia Mottley, along with other dignitaries. The visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean in 56 years.
During his trip, PM Modi will address a special session of Guyana’s parliament and participate in the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, aimed at enhancing cooperation with the Caribbean nations.
CARICOM, a group of 21 countries (15 members and 6 associate members), was established in 1973 through the Treaty of Chaguaramas, later revised in 2002 to foster a single market and economy. It focuses on economic integration, foreign policy coordination, social development, and security.
India and Barbados share a history of close cooperation in international forums like the UN, Commonwealth, and Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Barbados has consistently supported India’s multilateral initiatives, and the nation is home to around 3,000 people of Indian origin.
Mottley highlighted the significance of the visit, which followed earlier interactions at the UN General Assembly, as a testament to the strong and evolving relationship between India and CARICOM nations.
