President Joe Biden condemned Russia’s Christmas Day attack on Ukraine, targeting the country’s energy infrastructure and cities, which he said was an attempt to deprive Ukrainians of heat and electricity during winter.

In response to the attack, Biden said that he had ordered the US Defense Department to continue its flow of weapons to Ukraine. “The purpose of this outrageous attack was to cut off the Ukrainian people’s access to heat and electricity during winter and jeopardize the safety of its grid,” Biden said in a statement.

Russia’s attack involved the use of cruise and ballistic missiles, along with drones, against Ukraine’s energy system and cities. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, the US has pledged $175 billion in aid to assist Ukraine in its defense efforts.

As Biden’s presidency approaches its end, President-elect Donald Trump is to replace him on January 20. The continued US support for Ukraine is expected to remain a key focus in the lead-up to the transfer of power.
