With 41k new cases, India’s Covid-19 caseload nears 94-lakh mark

Coronavirus cases in India rose to 93,92,919 with 41,810 new infections in the last 24 hours. A total of 496 people died in the last 24 hours, and the number of active cases went down by 984. There are 4,53,956 active cases in the country. Over 42,000 people recovered from the deadly disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to over 88 lakh. The Indian Council of Medical Research said, “13,95,03,803 samples have been tested for Covid-19 up to 28 November. Of these, 12,83,449 samples were tested on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, the Serum Institute will apply within two weeks for an emergency use license of the coronavirus vaccine, which is being developed by the University of Oxford and pharma giant AstraZeneca, said the vaccine maker’s chief Adar Poonawalla on Saturday after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“As of now, we don’t have anything in writing with the Government of India around how many doses they will purchase but the indication is that it would be 300-400 million doses by July 2021. We are in the process of applying in the next two weeks for the emergency use,” he said.

The National Capital reported 4,906 fresh Covid-19 cases, 6325 people discharged, and 68 died in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 5.66 lakh.

Maharashtra reported 5,544 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 18,20,059. The death count in the state has gone up by 85 to 47,071. Out of which Mumbai reported 940 fresh Covid-19 cases, 515 people discharged, and 18 died in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu reported 1,459 new coronavirus cases, 1,471 people discharged, and nine died in the last 24 hours. West Bengal’s Covid-19 tally rose to 4,80,813 with 3,367 new cases, and 54 fatalities pushed the death count to 8,376.

Kerala registered 5,643 fresh Covid-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total caseload to almost six lakh. The death count mounted to 2,223 with 27 fatalities. A total of 5,861 patients have been cured of the infection, and 5,32,658 have recovered while 64,589 people are undergoing treatment. The total number of cases has touched 5.99 lakh in the state.

Several injured in clashes in Telangana’s Bhainsa, section 144 imposed

Nirmal (Telangana) [India], March 8 (ANI): Several people were injured and few vehicles were torched in clashes that broke out between two groups in Bhainsa of Telangana’s Nirmal district on Sunday, police said.
Section 144 have been imposed in Bhainsa town where the clashes took place.
According to Vishnu S Warrier, in-charge Superintendent of Police, the clash broke out over a petty issue between two groups at around 9 pm on Sunday.
“Some of the accused and 50 suspects have been taken in custody. Cases have been booked under various sections. CCTV footage of the area is being examined. Further investigation is going on,” he further said.
The police said an additional force of 600 police personnel and 40 officers from other districts have been deployed in the town.
Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao said he has requested the state home minister and Director General of Police to take stern action to bring the perpetrators of violence in Bhainsa.
“Peace & harmony is fundamental to the progress of civilised society Have requested Home Minister @mahmoodalitrs Garu and @TelanganaDGP Garu to take stern action to bring the perpetrators of violence in Bhainsa to justice Telangana Govt will not tolerate lawlessness in any form,” he tweeted. (ANI)

Rajya Sabha adjourned till 11 am tomorrow

New Delhi [India], March 8 (ANI): Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday following a ruckus over fuel prices in the parliament.
Earlier today, Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments following repeated sloganeering by the Opposition MPs.
“We will continue our agitation (demanding a discussion on fuel price rise) when Rajya Sabha reconvenes at 1 pm,” said Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.
“Petrol and diesel prices are nearly Rs 100 per litre and Rs 80 per litre respectively. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices have also gone up. Rs 21 lakh crores have been collected by putting excise duty/cess, because of this entire country including farmers are suffering,” Kharge had said.
After slogans were raised, Rajya Sabha Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu said: “I don’t want to take any drastic action on the first day.”
Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari has given Adjournment Motion Notice in Lok Sabha over the rise in fuel prices.
The second part of the Budget session of Parliament commenced from today with all COVID-19 precautionary measures in place. (ANI)

Karnataka Budget: Revenue deficit estimated to be Rs 15,134 crores

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 8 (ANI): Karnataka government in its Budget on Monday said the revenue deficit of the state is estimated to be Rs 15,134 crores during Financial Year 2021-22.
“The revenue deficit is estimated to be Rs 15,134 crores. The fiscal deficit is expected to be Rs 59,240 crores, which is 3.48 per cent of GSDP (Gross State Domestic Product). The total liabilities at the end of 2021-22 is estimated to be Rs 4,57,899 crore, which is 26.9 per cent of the GSDP. The suitable amendment will be brought to the Karnataka Fiscal Responsibility Act 2002 in this regard,” CM said in the Assembly.
Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, who also holds the finance portfolio, announced to construct Yathri Nivasa in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh for devotees from Karnataka visiting the temple town. He allocated Rs 10 crores in 2021-22 Budget and said the UP government will provide five-acre of land for it.
Reading out Budget for 2021-22, Karnataka CM also announced to establish goshala in every district of the state to prevent ‘slaughter of cows and to conserve livestock’.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders led by CLP leader Siddaramiah boycotted the Budget session in light of the alleged cases against Chief Minister and Ramesh Jarkiholi.
Siddaramiah also said six MLAs who were earlier with the Congress and JD(S) have got interim injunction, which is unconstitutional.
“People’s money should not be given to this government so we will protest in the session and stage a walkout. We will wear a black band and we will protest in the Assembly and council,” he added. (ANI)

SC extends limitation, asks Centre to amend guidelines for containment zones

New Delhi [India], March 8 (ANI): While disposing of the Suo moto case, the Supreme Court in an order on Monday extended the limitation and asked the Union of India (UOI) to amend the guidelines for containment zones, as discussed.
A three-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde and also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian passed the order on the suo motu case.
The Apex Court’s three-judge bench, led by the CJI Bobde passed the order on the lifting of the extension of the limitation period for filing of cases granted by the Court in March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (ANI)

Rajasthan: Sub-inspector arrested for allegedly raping woman for 3 days

Alwar (Rajasthan) [India], March 8 (ANI): A sub-inspector has been arrested in Rajasthan’s Alwar district for allegedly raping a woman for three days at the Kherli Police Station.
According to Jaipur Range Inspector General Hawasing Ghumaria, the woman had gone to file a complaint on March 1 regarding a matter involving dowry with the in-laws.
“The woman told us that the incidents took place on March 1, 2 and 3. There is room near the police booth where the inspector lives. The incident allegedly took place there,” Ghumaria said.
“We had sent the woman for a medical but she refused. But since this is a very serious matter, we have arrested the inspector,” he added. (ANI)

Army officer arrested from Tamil Nadu in army recruitment exam paper leak case

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], March 8 (ANI): A 45-year-old army officer of a major rank has been arrested by Pune city police in Tamil Nadu in connection with the Army recruitment exam paper leak.
The police said that the accused was arrested in Wellington town and has been brought to Pune where he will be produced in a court later on Monday.
The police further informed that it was the ninth arrest in the case in which two different FIRs were registered with the police last month.
Earlier, in a joint operation with military intelligence of southern command of the Indian Army, Pune city police had arrested eight accused in this case including two serving defence personnel, a defence civilian and some who were running pre-military training institutes in different parts of the country.
The army recruitment exam scheduled for February 28 was cancelled by the Indian Army after the leak was revealed. (ANI)
