Why This American Mother Prefers Life In India Over The USA: ‘More To Life Than Money’

Kristen Fischer, an American mother of three, made headlines after sharing a heartfelt video on Instagram about her decision to leave the United States and settle in New Delhi. Having first visited India in 2017 with her husband, Fischer moved permanently to India two years ago, and her experiences have sparked a conversation about the contrasting lifestyles in both countries.

Finding Community and Fulfillment in India

In her viral video, Kristen Fischer described America as a highly “individualistic” society, where social isolation is common. She expressed that the sense of “community, culture, and life” she discovered in India is unmatched. “There is more to life than money,” she stated, highlighting how her time in India has brought her immense joy and fulfillment that she felt was lacking in the US.

Kristen Fischer addressed the recurring question she faces: “Why would I want to leave America for India?” She explained that this question often reflects two assumptions: that India is a lesser place to live and that she would be worse off for being there. “If you are in India thinking that life in America is so much better, I want to tell you why I left,” she remarked.

A Balanced Perspective on America

While expressing her love for America, Kristen Fischer clarified that it is not a perfect place. “America has a lot of issues,” she noted, emphasizing that it fosters a “every man for themselves” mentality, where individuals are reluctant to assist those they don’t know. In contrast, she finds India to be vibrant and welcoming, filled with hospitality and a spirit of community.

“I think my kids are being set up for a more successful life and future in India,” she stated, highlighting the importance of social connections for her children’s development. Fischer explained, “In India, you are never alone. Anywhere you go, there are tons of people.”

Reactions from the Online Community

Fischer’s video resonated with many viewers, prompting a variety of responses. One user commented, “Making money in the US is not easy. The cost of living is high, and purchasing power in India is better.” Another user, who identifies as Tibetan but is now a Dutch citizen, remarked, “When I was in India, my life was way better in terms of mind and health. You never feel alone. I’m thinking of moving back to India next year!”

However, not all comments were entirely positive. A third user pointed out the challenges of living in India, mentioning the lack of law enforcement and safety concerns, particularly for women. “Glad to see, though, that you are enjoying your stay in India,” the user added, acknowledging the courteous nature of Indians toward foreigners.

Kristen Fischer’s reflections on life in India versus America have sparked meaningful discussions about the essence of community, culture, and what truly brings fulfillment in life. As she embraces her new life in India, her story serves as a reminder that happiness often transcends financial considerations.
