What was installed at the Supreme Court yesterday was a new Lady of Justice. With this, moves in India shift to newer articulations of justice. The blindfold is gone; she no longer sports a sword that rested in her hand. There stands the Constitution in its place. This installation, commissioned by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, tells the world that it is the law and not punishment.”.

Justice Chandrachud has commented that the law needs to break away from the colonial legacies and the law must appear to be fair and just. The Chief Justice said the statue should hold the Constitution in one hand and not a sword, so that a message goes out to the country that she dispenses justice according to the Constitution. The sword is a symbol of violence, but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws.” According to a source close to his office

The scales of justice is held in the right hand of the statue to symbolize the balance and careful consideration of facts and arguments from both parties before arriving at a verdict.
