Dr. Roop Lal Mahajan, Lewis Hester Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) at Virginia Tech University, USA, and an esteemed alumnus of PEC, revisited his alma mater on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

During his visit, Dr. Mahajan engaged in progressive discussions with students and faculty from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MMED) to gain insights into collaborative research initiatives. Driven by enthusiasm, the discussions aimed to further strengthen the ties between the institute and the department.

Dr. Mahajan, a 1964 batch PEC alumnus, had previously made a generous donation to establish two doctoral research fellowships within the MMED, showcasing his commitment to supporting research endeavors at his alma mater.

Welcoming the distinguished guest, Dr. J D Sharma, Head of MMED, and Prof. Uma Batra, Professor in MMED, provided an overview of the ongoing research activities within the department.

During interactions with MMED faculty, Ph.D. scholars, and students, Dr. Mahajan stressed the importance of establishing and maintaining a collaborative scientific environment at PEC. He emphasised that such an environment fosters interdisciplinary talents crucial for the quality and impact of science in today’s fast-paced world.

Dr. Mahajan underlined the significance of “the Power of Team Science,” encouraging young researchers to be passionate about their work and use scientific fundamentals to address complex problems. He also urged them to delve deep into statistical analysis data during their investigations.

In summary, Dr. Mahajan’s visit aimed to strengthen research collaborations and inspire the next generation of researchers at PEC.
