The Besut District Council is facing backlash after the reported shooting of Kopi, a stray dog who became an internet sensation for her playful moments with a stray kitten. The tragic event occurred during a stray culling operation on October 6, prompting public outcry and calls for accountability.
According to a local resident, who spoke to the animal-lover social media account My Forever Doggo (MFD), he heard loud gunshots and rushed outside to find Kopi lying injured and in distress. “Sadly, Kopi passed away,” the account shared, conveying the anguish felt by the community. The witness described Kopi as the “big sister” to the local strays, known for her nurturing spirit.

Kopi first gained attention in March after a TikTok user, AbbyRaz, captured her playing with a kitten in a viral video that received over 185,000 views. MFD highlighted this heartwarming moment, sharing two additional clips of the duo before announcing the tragic news of Kopi’s death. Following her passing, AbbyRaz paid tribute to Kopi on his social media, expressing sorrow over her untimely fate.
In the wake of this incident, an online petition has emerged on Change.org, initiated by Cristabel Leo, demanding the council to reassess its approach to managing stray animals. The petition asserts, “This was not urban management but an act of unwarranted brutality. Kopi did not deserve her fate. She deserved better measures for her and her street-bound companions.” It has garnered over 2,500 signatures, reflecting widespread support for the cause.
As public outrage grows, Malay Mail is seeking a response from the Besut District Council regarding the incident and its policies on stray animal management. Animal welfare advocates are urging the council to adopt humane strategies that prioritize the well-being of strays in the community, rather than resorting to lethal measures. The loss of Kopi serves as a painful reminder of the need for compassion and responsible management of stray populations.
