IN 2016, the Thane police held a very popular actres of 90s as a key accused in an illicit Rs. 2000 crore drug case. She was named to be involved in supplying ephedrine for the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine to a Rs 2000 crore international drug racket and gangster, intended for trafficking.
Mamta Kulkarni, once a popular actress of the 90s in Bollywood, returns to Mumbai after a long absence reportedly connected with the case. The actress has gone to town with her emotion of nostalgia and says that she was overwhelmed as she touched down in Mumbai after 25 years. “Hello guys, I am Mamta Kulkarni, I have come to India, Bombay, Aamchi Mumbai after 25 years. I am very nostalgic that I left India in 2000 and exactly in 2024 I am here. I am really overwhelmed and emotional; I don’t know how to express it. Before the flight touched ground I was looking at my left-right. I have almost been seeing my country from the top for 25 years. I started becoming emotional; there were tears in my eyes, I put my foot down from out of the Mumbai International Airport and I became totally overtaken, she said in a video.
Much earlier this year in 2024, Bombay High Court had quashed criminal proceedings against Kulkarni pertaining to the drugs case for which it stated there was not sufficient evidence. The case began with the major seizure by the Thane police in 2016 of Ephedrine worth 80 lakh. The police traced the substance back to a factory in Solapur, Maharashtra, attached to Avon Life Sciences Ltd., which is run by Kulkarni’s husband, Vicky Goswami. She was held as a prime accused because she was a director in the company and a shareholder.
The police accused Kulkarni as an accessory in the drug trafficking operation, which entailed the manufacture and supply of Ephedrine, a controlled drug. There is said to be some activity taken up by her in some meetings to discuss the Tanzania drug trade and Dubai as well. Kulkarni, however, appeared to file a case in High Court stating that she’s not guilty and there are no proofs against her too. It was a very great relief for the actress when the court dismissed her case, allowing her return back home without any case hanging onto her head.
