A couple from Kapu village in Chhattisgarh, has been making headlines as they have decided to wed each other in a more unusual way. Instead of all the traditional community rituals followed in marriages, the couple preferred to take an oath of the Indian Constitution to bless their union.
According to the Times of India, Pratima Lahre and Eman Lahre got married on December 18 without customary practices like “saat pheras,” “mangal sutra,” or “sindoor” ceremonies. They also gave up the traditional ritual of “band baaja.” Instead, the two promised to be each other’s support for life.
They took an oath in the Indian Constitution, which they stood in front of a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the father of the Constitution. Explaining their decision, groom Eman Lahre told the outlet that the prime reason was to save from unnecessary expenses. “This type of marriage saves on extravagant expenses,” he told the outlet, adding, “We decided to tie the knot with our families’ consent, avoiding unnecessary expenditure.”
The ceremony has sparked talks in the region, with most people commending it as a “meaningful approach to marriage.” Community members and the couple’s parents also welcomed the decision, giving their blessing to the newlyweds. According to observers, such a ceremony would inspire people to change traditional wedding practices.
