This tour was part of Gates’ India visit to mark the 25th anniversary of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It was his third Indian tour in three successive years, during which he met key players to understand the advancements in India’s technology, health, and development. Gates met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, declaring his admiration for India’s innovative approaches in seeking regional and global progress.
Gates also spoke with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on healthcare partnerships, especially maternal and child health, immunization, and sanitation. Gates also spoke with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss the challenges for development and potential for innovation in India.
The trip’s highlight was the visit by Gates to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute’s Pusa Campus in New Delhi, where he saw rural women being trained to fly drones under the Namo Drone Didi Scheme. The scheme seeks to empower women in rural India through increased independence and economic empowerment.
The visit was the first time the Gates Foundation Board of Trustees met in the Global South, highlighting India’s increasing importance to international health and development. In his blog, Gates reflected on the experience, saying, “I came away with new ideas because India is full of smart, ambitious people tackling some of the world’s hardest problems in creative ways.”
