Showing remarkable dominance, Vinesh Phogat secured a quota for the Paris Olympics in the women’s 50kg category by advancing to the final at the Asian Olympic Qualifier on Saturday without allowing her opponents to score a single point.
This marks India’s second quota spot for the Paris Games, following Antim Panghal’s achievement in the 53kg category with her bronze medal performance at the World Championships last year.
Vinesh, aged 29, has now attained her third consecutive Olympic quota, having participated in the Rio Games (2016) and Tokyo (2020) previously.
Vinesh, who played a prominent role in protesting against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, delivered a powerful performance, systematically defeating her opponents.
Asian Games and Commonwealth champion Phogat secured victory in the bout against Laura via technical superiority, achieving it in 4 minutes and 18 seconds.
