The parents of a deceased trainee doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College have expressed dissatisfaction with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s handling of the case. The victim’s father stated on Tuesday that the family has requested a CBI investigation, citing their lack of confidence in the Chief Minister’s efforts.

The father said, “We are not satisfied with the role of the CM (Mamata Banerjee) in the case; that’s why we approached the CBI. She hasn’t done anything. A policeman came to our house and said that Sanjay Roy has been arrested and will be tried in a fast-track court with a likely death sentence. But what happened to my daughter wasn’t the work of just one person. We’ve been saying from the start that others from the department are involved.”

Responding to Mamata Banerjee’s recent remarks about Durga Puja, the victim’s father said, “She may lead people to celebrate, but we believe no one will celebrate this year with joy. People across Bengal and the country see my daughter as their own.”

On September 9, the West Bengal CM urged people to return to festivities and requested junior doctors to resume their duties ahead of Durga Puja. The victim’s mother, however, found this appeal insensitive. “Durga Puja was celebrated in my house too; my daughter used to handle it herself. But Durga Puja will never be celebrated in my house again. The light in my home is gone. How can I ask people to return to the festival?” she questioned.

She further asked, “If this had happened in the Chief Minister’s family, would she still say this?”

The victim’s mother vowed that their fight for justice will continue. The second-year postgraduate medical student was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
